February 1, 2003 - Adoption rights for registered partners

On February 1, 2003, registered partners in Sweden were granted the right to be considered as adoptive parents and to have joint custody of children. This decision was an important step towards equal rights for same-sex couples.

The reform made it possible for couples in registered partnerships to adopt children together, both nationally and internationally, after the same assessment as other couples. It strengthened children's right to safety and recognized more family forms in law.
