On 1 April 2009, the Riksdag decided that the Marriage Code would be amended so that even two persons of the same sex can enter into marriage. The special partnership law was also repealed. However, the couples who had entered into a registered partnership prior to the repeal of the Act, May 1, 2009, may continue to be registered partners if they wish. Those who instead want to be married have the opportunity to convert their registered partnership into marriage through a notification or through marriage.
