Swedish Partnership Act 1 January

January 1, 1995 - The Partnership Act is introduced in Sweden

On January 1, 1995, the Swedish Partnership Act came into force. The law gave same-sex couples the opportunity to register their partnership and obtain legal recognition of their relationship.

The partnership provided largely the same rights and obligations as marriage, with some exceptions, including adoption and assisted reproduction, which came later. The reform was a crucial step for LGBTQ+ rights in Sweden.

The introduction of the Partnership Act marked the beginning of a major change in legislation, which later led to the gender-neutral Marriage Act in 2009.
